Tis #3 by Frank McCourt

Quote #1: With the months left in lenggries there is nothing to do most of the day but run the supply room and read books from the base library, since there are no more laundry trips to Dachau.

Significance #1: I guess Frank has nothing to do in the army anymore more since he's just a clerk and finishes all his work during the day. I think Frank and his clerk buddies just looked forward to the laundry trips because they made side stops on the way their to Dachau. If Frank only has a couple of months left i think Frank will go back to Limerick.

Character Judgment #1: I Think the recent trip to Limerick Frank took had got him to about his future after the army because he realized that he needed to help his brother and mother more because he thought the money he was sending them weekly was enough, but it could really help only one person. I think Frank is going to look for a better job because he is now alert after the things that happened in his stay at Limerick.

Question #1: What do you think Frank will do after his remaining months in the army?

Quote #2: There's one black man, Horace, and he sits away from the rest of us. He smiles once in a while and says nothing because that's the way it is.

Significance #2: It sucks how African-Americans aren't treated equally like everyone else on the platform because guessing from the quote I guess it's better for him to be quiet. I wonder why people don't like other people because of their skin color, its no like they did anything bad.

Character Judgment #2: I think the immigrants should treat themselves with respects because they share one thing in common, that they came from another common. I wonder why Frank is going along with the rest of his worker friends and not inviting Horace to their hang outs.

Question #2: How do you think Frank feels about working with Horace at his new job?

#2Tis by Frank McCourt

Quote #1: When we're not out out in the field we're in large rooms listening how dangerous and sneaky the Koreans are, North Koreans and the Chinese who are even worse.

Significance #1: I think the significance of this quote is that all the generals and corporals are thinking about their own days they were out in the battlefield and maybe giving extra tips how to fight the war. This makes me think if that is how the our real army operates by making fun of the side opposing while America could has Chinese immigrants and maybe Korean immigrants as well.

Character Judgment #1: I think that most of the generals and corporals in the army treat immigrants in the army differently because just since Frank questioned a order they took away his three day pass and made him scrub dishes. To other "American" people they got off with a warning.

Question #1: Do you think think it was right for Frank to join the army? Why?

Quote #2: They seem ordinary though you'd like to lean across to the group at the next table and say, "Did anyone her kill Jews?" Of course we were told in army orientation to keep our mouths shut and treat the Germans as out allies in the war against godless communism, but you'd like to ask out of pure curiosity or to see the looks on their faces.

Significance #2: I wonder why Germany would be an ally to the U.S when they lost to the U.S in WWII, I guess they are scared of the U.S army or they just want to redeem themselves. Anyway I think I would actually have the same curiosity of Frank because it was a big war and the Germans are infamous for that.

Character Judgment #2: I think it was rude for Frank to ask just straight to their face because it was probably a big deal for them also so I would work that line into a conversation with them, instead of just asking. I also think its mean at the orientation that the army says to pretend like they are our allies because maybe U.S soldiers might not aide the German soldiers in battle.

Question #2: Do you think Frank is actually going to go to battle in Korea?

Children of Immigrants

1) Photograph: I chose the photograph street play of Chicago because it shows the diversity of people in America getting along. It also shows that the parents also get along as their kids are playing. (photograph taken in 1997)

2)Quote: Home is a place to protect my family and me. A place to sleep, eat , study and take a bath. Also the sweetest and safest place I've been. I chose this quote because this is very true all the things in the quote is what I feel about my home. This quote makes me think about those who might not have a home or those who don't live in a safe area. ( Quote by Rosy Nhol, Cambodia) from between the cultures.

3) The essay i chose is titled The Untold Story of a Chinese-American, the essay is about about a boy's father when he was six and he had to live through the communism of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. This story grabbed my attention because it was about a war the U.S was involved in.

From Haven to Home

I think the purpose of the Jewish museum field trip was to get an idea on how hard life can be if you are “different” from the majority of the people. I think that Judaism is one of the most discriminated religions in the world because no other people with a certain religion had to go through a holocaust and go to concentration camps where they were killed just because they were Jews. What I found interesting were that some founding people of America were Jewish like George Washington and he was our fist president, and Albert Einstein was also Jewish and he was one of the greatest mathematicians. After some Jews escaped from the horror going on in Europe they prepared themselves by building a synagogue and starting the underground rail road just in case if their kind was discriminated again.
The original group of Jews that landed in America(1954) were in New Amsterdam and there were twenty-three of them. The Dutch governor of New Amsterdam did not want the Jewish people because he thought they would be a financial burden to New Amsterdam but was forced to keep them as long as they did not worship in public but little by little the governor’s dislike for grew as he was stripping their rights from them. They petitioned this unjust act and the Jews of New Amsterdam won their case and got their basic rights as a citizen back.
What makes me wonder about this is why people get so carried away by hating someone for their religion if the person themselves had not done anything bad.

#1 Tis by Frank McCourt

1) Quote: Of course you don't. If you don't know the difference between a bath mat and a towel how could you know that's the great Boss Flynn from the Bronx and most powerful man in America next to President Truman.

1) Significance: I think that priest is lying to Frank because I don't believe the second most powerful man in America is riding an elevator and picks his nose. I think Flynn get Frank a job because the priest might convince him to talk to Flynn.

1)Character Judgment: I don't think the priest is a priest or even Irish because he did 't have an accent and he is supposedly from Ireland. Maybe he just says he's a priest to help people trust him like Frank because if I were Frank I would of rather slept on the floor than with the priest.

1) Question: Why is the priest helping Frank if he just met him on the boat to New York?

2) Quote: People say that New York is the city of dreams but when I got here all the dream are gone and not at all what I expected. I never thought to be going around a hotel lobby and picking up after people and scouring toilet bowls in the lavatories.

2) Significance: I think that a lot of immigrants dreams are crushed because so many come over to America thinking that they are going to live a rich life because that's what Frank thought and his job is basically a janitor. Maybe Frank might find a better job.

2) Character judgment: I think that his landlord is kind of cruel because she doesn't Frank have the lights on ever and he can't eat in his room. I think Frank needs a new place to stay but I guess that in that place Frank is in is the only place he can afford.

2) Question: Do all immigrants have the idea that once they get to America they are going to live a rich life by getting a good job?

Home Work

Immigrant Homework

The definition of immigrant is a person who comes to a country where they weren’t born and settle down there or a plant or animal that migrates to area previously unknown. Well my mom was is an immigrant from San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosí which is a city from Mexico, but my dad is from Nogales, Arizona.
I guess some of my friends parents are immigrants but I don’t my friends are immigrants, two of my aunts and one uncle from my mom’s side are immigrants but none of my cousins or sibling are immigrants.
I think there is a lot of immigrants in the U.S is because its one of the best countries in the world and one with a lot of protection, and like some books I’ve read it calls the U.S the land of opportunities and that is true because a lot of people can get good supporting jobs here and most education in the U.S is free. I thinks its also because of the democracy of this country because in this country if you are 18 years old you can vote and is some countries you don’t have the right to do that. In this country every citizen has equal rights and if they fit under the jurisdiction so the U.S offers many opportunities to immigrants and that’s why I think many people come here to live.
Well there would be a lot of effects of immigration in San Diego because San Diego is right next to the border of Mexico. There is a lot of effects like in Chicano the murals there since they are painted all over the bottom of the bridge. Not only Mexican affected San Diego also Asian immigrants since San Diego is next to the pacific ocean. The U.S might be the most diverse country with all immigrants that immigrated here and they helped our country be more equal to every citizen.
